How you can help a depressed friend

Depression is a condition that affects millions of people all around the world. It is something that is commonly overlooked but can be treated. Friends and families are afflicted with depression and it affects their daily lives. You may have a friend that is depressed. There are many ways you can help.

Understand what depression is.

Depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. It is something the person who is afflicted with it cannot help. They can’t help their feelings or their mood swings. They can’t help feeling like they are down in a deep hole with no way out.

Be involved

If you have a friend that is depressed, be in their life. Let your friend know you are there whenever your friend needs you. You need to be there so they might be able to talk to you and let you know how they feel. Be involved in daily activities. Those that are depressed will want to be alone. Be there on a daily basis.

Treatment is primary.

Understand that depression is a medical condition. It is something that you cannot fix for your friend and they can’t fix themselves. A medical professional is the only one that can diagnose the condition of depression and prescribe medication.

Listen to them.

A person with depression will want to talk. Be patient and listen to what they say. Let your friend know they are not alone and you will be there to listen.

Don’t joke about it.

Depression is a condition that is very serious. Joking about it with them may make them feel even worse about how they feel. If your friend feels that this is a joke to you, when it is very real to them, it may deepen your friend’s feeling of depression.

Be positive.

You having a positive attitude can help a person suffering with depression to feel a little better about themselves and their situation. It is great to sympathize with them and listen to them, But talking and interacting with your friend in a positive way can help them through the hard depression feelings.

Make progress in little steps.

A person who is depressed will not feel like doing anything. They tend to let things go. Household chores that would otherwise be routing seem like a mountain of work. Let your friend focus on one thing at a time so they won’t feel overwhelmed.

Depression is real and it affects millions. Be there for your friend in a positive way and make sure that they receive treatment for this serious condition.

Even though the word depression is used loosely and frequently in our everyday language to describe somber and downcast moods, there are those who are classified as being clinically depressed. Those who are clinically depressed do not simply have a “sad feeling,” they are also prone to physical pain and relationship strains. When a person suffers from depression, the sad moods attribute to disinterest in everyday life, like no longer wanting to go going to work and not showing interest to care for family members.

Depression can be frustrating on the depressed individual and those who care for the individual. Many times the depressed individual wants to “snap” out of it, but they are unable to do so. Seeing a loved one depressed brings on feelings of helplessness because they cannot make the depressed person happy and full of life again. In severe cases, depression can lead to suicidal thoughts, and even worse – suicide. Annually, approximately 15.1% of Americans over the age of 18 are diagnosed by a professional health care provider as having depression. It is also estimated that 1 in 6 will develop depression within their lifetime.

Although depression does not discriminate, there are certain populations that are more prone to suffer from depression. For example, women are diagnosed to have depression at much higher numbers than men. As many as 20.2% of women are classified as depressed, while 8.2% of men are classified as depressed. Teenagers have also been studied to check for depression and these studies have shown between 20-40% of teenagers can have multiple stages of depression with a 2 year time span.

In addition, social determinants play a role in depression. Social groups, such as the unemployed, those with little education, people without health insurance, to name a few, are at higher risk of depression.

Once a person is diagnosed with depression, there comes the daunting task of how to help with depression. Ways to help with depression can be in the form of medication, seeking a psychologist, or self treatment. Often it is a combination of these forms that help individuals overcome depression, as there is no easy answer. Individuals respond to these forms of treatment differently and thus treatment is looked at on a case by case basis.
